On August 29, Her Excellency Nicola PollittUK Ambassador to Nepal, Deputy Ambassador Dr. Luke Beaumont and the team from British Embassy visited Kamdhenu Dairy Development Cooperative (KDDC), a partner of Commercial Agriculture for Smallholders and Agribusiness (CASA) Programme of Swisscontact

The objectives of the visit were to meet and get to know about the CASA programme and interact with Kamdhenu Dairy.

The delegates were welcomed by board members from the dairy at its new factory in Tarahara, Sunsari. The discussion mainly focused on CASA’s upcoming engagement with Kamdhenu and the current scenario and challenges of the dairy sector in Nepal.

CASA’s primary work is to support a shift in agriculture, away from subsistence farming towards a more productive, commercially vibrant agriculture sector by supporting agribusinesses to connect more smallholder farmers to commercial markets and meet increased demand from local, regional and export markets.

CASA, funded by UK aid and implemented by Swisscontact in Nepal, recently partnered with Kamdhenu Dairy Development Cooperative. The dairy is in its final stage of operating its new upgraded modern plant, which has the capacity of handling 50,000 liters of milk per day. CASA’s partnership with Kamdhenu will focus on:

  • Increasing farmers aggregation by collecting milk from more collection/chilling centres and dairy cooperatives.
  • Capacity development of dairy technical team for effective utilization of the dairy plant and diversification new dairy products like ice-cream and lassi.
  • Capacity development of marketing team to implement marketing strategy, develop linkages with retailers and distributors and expand sales in new areas.

Her excellency was given a tour around the new KDDC facility, and the team discussed the growth prospects and plans for capacity utilization of the new facility. Her excellency interacted with the KDDC team with questions about transportation feasibility and the effect of seasonality of milk production.
